Does thinking about religion make you less religious?

A recent LA Times article begins:

Scientists have revealed one of the reasons why some folks are less religious than others: They think more analytically, rather than going with their gut. And thinking analytically can cause religious belief to wane — for skeptics and true believers alike.

I think that is what a lot of people suspect… How about you?

Me? (I know you want to know!) Hogwash!

The problem today is that no one really knows what analytical thinking really is! What we THINK “thinking” is – is hardly that. Our educational system (including the church) and parents NEED to be training our kids up not so much in “knowledge”, but in critical thinking with reason and logic so that we can make WISE and Godly decisions.

I keep stressing to people that our Christian faith is a REASONABLE faith and it reflects our observations about the world… about beauty and sin and suffering… It calls the spade a spade and presents a wholly reasonable God who has won for us salvation.

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scoffer, but his delight is in the law of the LORD and in His law he meditates day and night.” – Psalm 1
