James 1:5-11

Our Reading for today:

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

James 1:9           The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.

COMMENTS:

Remember that in our reading we are striving for understanding! Read over the verses 2,3,4 times! Think about them! How do they apply to your life? Keep a journal if you can! Then when you pray, have it be a prayer that REFLECTS those thoughts.

+ remember the previous verses deal with trials… we need wisdom as we navigate our trials… this is not worldly wisdom that we learn at school, but spiritual wisdom! God’s wisdom far outshines the wisdom of any scholar or philosopher! How silly we are to go to anyone else besides God for wisdom! Where do we get this wisdom? Scripture and the guiding of the Holy Spirit (in accordance with that scripture)!

+ vs. 9 & 10: Is it possible to be sinfully proud of your humility (or low or high position)? What does it mean to be proud of my low position (as I am a very rich person, right?), that I will pass away like a flower? Perhaps it is suggesting that I be glad/proud that all these riches I have are nothing compared with what God has in store for me? Can a rich man have a humble heart that is “right” with God? Or is this saying that they are forever doomed?
